Ingredients
Scale
French Toast Layer
- 1 loaf brioche or French bread, cubed
- 1 1/2 cups fresh or frozen blueberries
Custard Mixture
- 6 large eggs
- 2 cups milk
- 1/2 cup heavy cream
- 1/2 cup maple syrup
- 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon
Garnish
- Powdered sugar for garnish
Instructions
- Prepare the baking dish: Grease a 9×13 inch baking dish to prevent sticking before layering the ingredients.
- Layer bread and blueberries: Add half of the cubed bread to the dish, then sprinkle half of the blueberries evenly over the bread. Repeat with the remaining bread and blueberries for a layered effect.
- Mix the custard: In a large bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, heavy cream, maple syrup, vanilla extract, and cinnamon until well combined.
- Soak the bread: Pour the egg mixture evenly over the layered bread and blueberries, ensuring all pieces are soaked.
- Refrigerate overnight: Cover the dish and refrigerate overnight to allow the bread to absorb the custard fully for a creamy texture.
- Preheat the oven: Take the casserole out of the fridge and preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
- Bake the casserole: Bake the dish uncovered for 45 to 50 minutes until the top is golden brown and the center is set but still moist.
- Rest and serve: Let the casserole cool and rest for 10 minutes before serving. Dust with powdered sugar as an optional garnish for added sweetness and presentation.
Notes
- For best results, use brioche bread for its rich flavor and soft texture, but French bread is a good substitute.
- The casserole can be assembled the night before and refrigerated to save time on the day of serving.
- If using frozen blueberries, do not thaw before adding or they may make the casserole watery.
- Maple syrup can be substituted with honey or agave syrup if preferred.
- Serve with a side of fresh fruit or yogurt for a complete breakfast.
- Leftovers can be refrigerated for up to 3 days and heated in the oven or microwave before serving.
