Description

A delightful and savory Caramelized Onion Tart recipe featuring a golden puff pastry base topped with rich caramelized onions, fragrant thyme, and gooey Gruyère cheese. This French-inspired dish is perfect as an appetizer or light meal.

Ingredients

Scale

Puff Pastry:

  • 1 sheet puff pastry (thawed)

Caramelized Onions:

  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 4 large yellow onions (thinly sliced)
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon fresh thyme leaves (or 1/2 teaspoon dried)

Additional Ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup grated Gruyère cheese (or Swiss)
  • 1 egg (beaten, for egg wash)
  • Fresh thyme or arugula for garnish (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven: Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Caramelize Onions: In a skillet, cook onions in olive oil and butter until golden and caramelized. Season with salt, pepper, and thyme.
  3. Prepare Puff Pastry: Unroll puff pastry on the baking sheet, score a border, and prick the center. Spread caramelized onions on the pastry, add cheese, and brush the edges with egg wash.
  4. Bake: Bake for 20-25 minutes until golden. Let cool slightly, then garnish with thyme or arugula.

Notes

  • You can prepare the caramelized onions up to 3 days in advance and store them in the fridge.
  • Try adding goat cheese or balsamic glaze for a flavor variation.
