Description

These Copycat Olive Garden Breadsticks are soft, buttery, and perfectly garlicky, just like the iconic restaurant favorite. Made from scratch with a simple yeast dough and brushed with garlic butter, these breadsticks are a delicious addition to any meal or perfect as a snack on their own.

Ingredients

Scale

Dough Ingredients

  • 1 cup (240ml) warm water (110°F/43°C)
  • 2¼ tsp (1 packet) active dry yeast
  • 1 tbsp granulated sugar
  • 1 tbsp unsalted butter, melted
  • 1¼ tsp salt
  • 3 cups (360g) all-purpose flour (plus more as needed)

Garlic Butter Topping

  • 3 tbsp unsalted butter, melted
  • ½ tsp garlic powder
  • ½ tsp salt (or to taste)

Instructions

  1. Activate the Yeast: In a large bowl, combine the warm water, granulated sugar, and active dry yeast. Stir gently and let the mixture sit for 5–10 minutes until it becomes foamy, indicating that the yeast is active.
  2. Make the Dough: Add the melted butter, salt, and 2 cups of the flour to the yeast mixture. Mix well, then gradually add the remaining flour, stirring until a soft dough begins to form.
  3. Knead the Dough: Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and knead for 8–10 minutes until the dough is smooth and elastic. Alternatively, use a stand mixer fitted with a dough hook and knead for 6–8 minutes.
  4. First Rise: Place the dough in an oiled bowl, cover it with a clean towel or plastic wrap, and set it in a warm spot to rise for about 1 hour, or until it has doubled in size.
  5. Shape the Breadsticks: Punch down the risen dough and divide it into 12 equal portions. Roll each piece into a 7-inch long rope and place them on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper, spaced slightly apart.
  6. Second Rise: Cover the breadsticks loosely with a towel and let them rise again for 30–45 minutes until they become puffy.
  7. Bake: Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Bake the breadsticks for 12–14 minutes or until they turn a golden brown color.
  8. Brush with Garlic Butter: While the breadsticks are still warm, brush them generously with the melted butter mixed with garlic powder and salt. Serve immediately for the best flavor and texture.

Notes

  • If the dough feels too sticky while kneading, add flour a tablespoon at a time to get the right consistency.
  • To achieve extra softness, brush the breadsticks with additional butter just after baking and before serving.
  • You can add a sprinkle of grated Parmesan cheese or chopped parsley on top for extra flavor.
  • Store leftover breadsticks in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days or freeze for longer storage.
