Description

This Easy Apple Tart combines a flaky prepared pie crust with a tender, spiced apple filling. The apples are sautéed with brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and lemon juice to create a warm, comforting dessert that’s perfect for any season. The tart is baked until golden and crisp, offering a deliciously rustic treat that serves eight.

Ingredients

Scale

Crust

  • 1 prepared pie crust

Filling

  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • ¼ cup brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 3 pounds apples (about 9 cups), cored and sliced
  • 2 teaspoons lemon juice
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg

Topping

  • 1 teaspoon water
  • 1 teaspoon granulated sugar

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven: Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper to prevent sticking and prepare for baking the tart.
  2. Cook the apple filling: In a large skillet over medium-high heat, melt 2 tablespoons of butter. Add the sliced apples, ¼ cup brown sugar, 2 tablespoons sugar, 2 teaspoons lemon juice, 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon, and ¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg. Toss everything together, then reduce the heat to medium-low, cover the skillet, and cook for 15-20 minutes until the apples are tender. Remove from heat and allow the mixture to cool.
  3. Prepare the crust: Roll out the prepared pie crust on parchment paper into a 14-inch circle. Carefully transfer the dough with the parchment paper onto the lined baking sheet.
  4. Assemble the tart: Arrange the cooled apple mixture in the center of the dough circle, leaving about a 2-inch border around the edges. Fold the edges of the dough up and over the apples to form a rustic edge, gently pressing to seal.
  5. Add topping: Brush the exposed dough edges with 1 teaspoon of water, then sprinkle 1 teaspoon of granulated sugar over the brushed dough for a sweet, crisp finish.
  6. Bake the tart: Place the tart in the preheated oven and bake for 45 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown and the apples are tender when pierced. Remove from the oven and let the tart cool slightly before slicing and serving.

Notes

  • Use a variety of apples like Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, or Fuji for a balance of tart and sweet flavors.
  • Ensure apples are evenly sliced for uniform cooking.
  • Serve warm or at room temperature, optionally with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream.
  • Leftovers can be refrigerated for up to 3 days and reheated gently.
  • To make it gluten-free, substitute the pie crust with a gluten-free version.
