Description

This Easy Christmas Red Velvet Cake Trifle recipe combines moist red velvet cake cubes layered with sweet cherry pie filling and luscious cream cheese whipped cream. It’s a festive, no-fuss dessert perfect for holiday gatherings, allowing you to prepare components ahead and assemble quickly. The trifle is visually stunning with vibrant layers and offers a delightful balance of creamy, fruity, and cake textures.

Ingredients

Scale

Red Velvet Cake

  • 1 box red velvet cake mix (prepared with vegetable oil and eggs as per cake mix directions)

Cream Cheese Whipped Cream

  • 8 oz package cream cheese (softened)
  • 2 cups heavy whipping cream
  • 1/4 cup powdered sugar (may add more to taste)
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • Pinch of salt

Other

  • 21 oz cherry pie filling (canned)
  • Optional: crushed candy canes for garnish

Instructions

  1. Prepare Red Velvet Cake: Prepare the red velvet cake mix according to the directions on the box and bake it in a 9×13 inch pan. Allow the cake to cool completely before cutting.
  2. Whip Cream Cheese: Using an electric mixer, whip the softened cream cheese in a small bowl until soft and fluffy. Set aside.
  3. Whip Heavy Cream: In a large bowl, whip the heavy cream on medium speed with an electric mixer until soft peaks form.
  4. Combine Cream Cheese and Whipped Cream: Add the whipped cream cheese to the whipped cream and continue whipping on high speed until stiff peaks form. Mix in the powdered sugar, vanilla extract, and a pinch of salt. Taste and add additional powdered sugar if desired for extra sweetness. The cream cheese whipped cream can be made up to one day ahead and stored covered in the refrigerator.
  5. Cut Cake into Cubes: When ready to assemble, cut the cooled red velvet cake into cubes.
  6. Layer Cake Cubes: Place a layer of cake cubes in the bottom of a trifle dish.
  7. Add Cherry Pie Filling: Spread one-third of the cherry pie filling evenly over the cake cubes.
  8. Add Cream Cheese Whipped Cream: Spread one-third of the cream cheese whipped cream evenly on top of the cherry filling.
  9. Repeat Layers: Repeat layering two more times — cake cubes, cherry pie filling, and cream cheese whipped cream — finishing with a top layer of cream cheese whipped cream.
  10. Chill and Serve: Serve immediately, or cover and refrigerate for up to one day before serving. Optionally garnish with crushed candy canes for a festive touch.

Notes

  • Make sure the cake is fully cooled before cutting to avoid crumbling.
  • You can prepare the cream cheese whipped cream up to one day ahead to save time.
  • For a stronger cherry flavor, more cherry pie filling can be added between layers.
  • Crushed candy canes add a festive crunch and minty flavor if desired.
  • Use a glass trifle dish to showcase the beautiful layers.
