Description

Grandma’s Onion Squares are a delicious, savory appetizer featuring caramelized onions and melted Swiss cheese on a buttery crescent roll crust. Perfect as a party snack or potluck treat, these squares offer a comforting blend of flavors with a tender, golden-baked topping.

Ingredients

Scale

Base

  • 1 sheet refrigerated crescent roll dough
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter

Onion Filling

  • 2 large yellow onions, thinly sliced
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme

Topping Mixture

  • 1 cup shredded Swiss cheese
  • 1/4 cup mayonnaise
  • 1 large egg, beaten
  • 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven and Prepare Dish: Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C) and lightly grease a 9×9-inch baking dish to prevent sticking.
  2. Prepare Crescent Dough Base: Unroll the crescent roll dough and press it firmly into the bottom of the baking dish, making sure to seal any seams so that it forms a flat and even crust.
  3. Sauté Onions: In a large skillet over medium heat, melt the butter. Add the thinly sliced onions along with salt, black pepper, and dried thyme. Cook for 15 to 20 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the onions become soft, caramelized, and golden brown.
  4. Mix Topping: In a separate bowl, combine shredded Swiss cheese, mayonnaise, beaten egg, and all-purpose flour. Mix until well combined, then fold in the sautéed onions evenly.
  5. Assemble and Bake: Spread the onion and cheese mixture evenly over the crescent dough in the baking dish. Bake in the preheated oven for 20 to 25 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and fully set.
  6. Cool and Serve: Allow the onion squares to cool slightly before cutting into 9 squares. Serve warm or at room temperature as a flavorful appetizer.

Notes

  • These onion squares can be enjoyed warm or at room temperature, making them ideal for parties or potlucks.
  • Try substituting Swiss cheese with Gruyère or cheddar for a different flavor profile.
