Description

A comforting and hearty Meat & Potato Casserole featuring layers of seasoned ground beef or venison, thinly sliced potatoes, creamy mushroom soup sauce, and melted cheese, baked to perfection for a satisfying family meal.

Ingredients

Scale

Main Ingredients

  • 1 lb. lean ground beef or venison
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 1 tsp garlic powder (optional)
  • 1 tsp paprika (optional)
  • 1 tsp rosemary (optional)
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 3 cups thinly sliced potatoes (about 5 potatoes)
  • 1 1/2 cups cream of mushroom soup (1 can)
  • 1/2 cup stock (any kind)
  • 1/4 cup milk or cream
  • 1 1/2 cups shredded cheese

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Set your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease an 11×7-inch glass baking dish to prepare for assembling the casserole.
  2. Cook Meat: In a skillet over medium heat, saute the chopped onion until translucent. Add the ground beef or venison and cook until browned, breaking it apart as it cooks. Season with garlic powder, paprika, rosemary, salt, and pepper. Drain off any excess grease after cooking.
  3. Prepare Sauce: In a mixing bowl, whisk together the cream of mushroom soup, stock, milk or cream, salt, and pepper until smooth and combined.
  4. Layer Ingredients: Place half of the sliced potatoes evenly in the bottom of the prepared baking dish. Pour a portion of the soup mixture over the potatoes to coat them. Spread half of the cooked meat mixture over the soup layer, then sprinkle with half of the shredded cheese. Repeat the layering with remaining potatoes, soup mixture, meat, and cheese.
  5. Bake: Cover the baking dish tightly with greased aluminum foil (grease the side touching the food to prevent sticking). Bake in the preheated oven for 1 to 1.5 hours, or until the potatoes are tender when pierced with a fork.
  6. Serve: Remove the casserole from the oven and let it cool for a few minutes before slicing and serving warm for a comforting and flavorful meal.

Notes

  • Use lean ground meat to reduce excess grease and fat.
  • For a gluten-free version, ensure the cream of mushroom soup is gluten-free or use a homemade substitute.
  • You can substitute different cheeses like cheddar, mozzarella, or a blend for varied flavor.
  • Add additional vegetables like mushrooms or bell peppers for extra nutrition and flavor.
  • The casserole can be prepared a day ahead and reheated before serving.
