Description

These Philly Cheesesteak Sliders are a delicious and easy-to-make appetizer or meal, featuring tender shaved steak, sautéed onions and bell peppers, melted provolone cheese, and a flavorful buttery glaze all layered on soft Hawaiian rolls. Perfect for game day or casual gatherings, they offer the classic Philly cheesesteak flavor in a convenient slider form.

Ingredients

Scale

Main Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 yellow onion, sliced
  • 1 green bell pepper, thinly sliced
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • ½ lb fresh shaved steak (beef or chicken)
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • Kosher salt and freshly cracked black pepper, to taste
  • 12 Hawaiian rolls
  • 12 slices provolone cheese, thinly sliced

Glaze

  • ¼ cup butter, melted
  • ½ teaspoon dried thyme
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • 2 teaspoons Dijon mustard
  • 2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce

Instructions

  1. Preheat and prepare baking dish: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9×13 inch baking dish to prevent sticking.
  2. Sauté vegetables: Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the sliced onions and cook until they start to soften. Next, add the thinly sliced green bell peppers and minced garlic, cooking until all vegetables are softened and fragrant. Remove them from the skillet and set aside.
  3. Cook the steak: In the same skillet, add the shaved steak, breaking it up with a wooden spoon as it cooks. Brown the meat thoroughly. Season it with Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, kosher salt, and freshly cracked black pepper to taste. Once cooked, remove from heat and set aside.
  4. Prepare the glaze: In a small bowl, whisk together the melted butter, dried thyme, brown sugar, Dijon mustard, and Worcestershire sauce until well combined.
  5. Assemble the sliders: Place the bottom halves of the Hawaiian rolls evenly in the prepared baking dish. Layer half of the provolone cheese slices over the rolls, followed by half of the sautéed vegetables, all of the cooked steak, the remaining provolone cheese, and finally the remaining sautéed vegetables. Place the top halves of the rolls on the assembled ingredients and brush them generously with the prepared glaze.
  6. Bake the sliders: Bake in the preheated oven for 15 to 18 minutes, or until the tops are golden brown and the cheese inside is melted and bubbly.
  7. Serve: Remove the sliders from the oven, slice them individually, and serve hot for best flavor and texture.

Notes

  • Use either beef or chicken shaved steak as preferred; traditional Philly cheesesteak is made with beef.
  • For extra spice, add some sliced jalapeños to the sautéed vegetables.
  • Hawaiian rolls provide a sweet contrast which pairs well with the savory filling but can be substituted with slider buns of choice.
  • This recipe can be prepared ahead by assembling the sliders and refrigerating before baking.
  • Leftovers can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 2 days and reheated in the oven for best results.
