Instructions
- Prepare the Puff Pastry: Roll out the thawed puff pastry slightly on a floured surface to smooth and even out the sheet.
- Cut the Pastry: Cut the puff pastry into 6 equal squares or rectangles, making sure they are uniform for even stacking and baking.
- Arrange Base Layers: Place 3 puff pastry squares on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper or a silicone mat.
- Add Mustard Layer: Spread a thin layer of Dijon mustard on each of the base pastry squares, if using, for extra flavor.
- Layer Turkey and Cheese: Place one slice of turkey breast on each pastry square, then sprinkle evenly with shredded cheese and black pepper. Add garlic powder if desired.
- Create Stacks: Optionally add sautéed onions, spinach, sliced tomatoes, or roasted peppers on top of the cheese to customize the stacks.
- Seal the Stacks: Top each filled pastry square with the remaining 3 puff pastry squares to create stacks. Gently press the edges to seal the layers together.
- Apply Egg Wash: Beat the egg and brush it over the tops of the pastry stacks to ensure a golden glossy finish when baked.
- Add Seeds: Sprinkle sesame seeds or poppy seeds on top of the egg-washed pastry stacks for added texture and appearance.
- Bake: Bake in a preheated oven at 375°F (190°C) for 15-18 minutes, or until the pastry is puffed up and golden brown.
- Cool Slightly: Remove from the oven and let the pastry stacks cool slightly on a wire rack to set before serving.
- Garnish and Serve: Garnish with freshly chopped parsley or chives and serve warm with spicy mayo or honey mustard on the side.
Notes
- Make sure the puff pastry is fully thawed but still cold for easier handling and best puffing results.
- You can customize the fillings with your favorite deli meats or vegetables according to preference.
- Egg wash helps achieve a beautifully golden crust, but you can omit for a lighter color.
- Serve immediately after warming to enjoy the crispiest texture.
- Leftovers can be stored in the refrigerator and gently reheated in the oven to regain crispness.
